sketches

Some more sketches from the academy. Great times here, my mind is being blown every day!
Here are some sketches, one for fun, some gestures for a final piece (with James Jean copies in there), and the early sketch for the painting below.

I had a great time in NY! I went for a Society of Illustrators function. After reviewing my work and other terrific student illustrators I was awarded the 2008 Zankel Scholarship from a panel of illustrators and AD's. I feel very lucky since the other artists (Sam, Cassandra, and David) are extremely talented. There should be an official announcement on the Society website soon.

take care,
-francis

loving these gestures. i'm curious what type of pencil is being used?

Seajay: Thanks. I'm using an orange color-erase pencil to block in the basic flow/gesture and go in with a 3b and a 8b graphite pencil to finish them off. These are more loose, but I bring some drawings to finish this way also.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
