flies, Snoop, and Pez dispensers

I've been soaking in everything lately. The biggest thing going on is probably my figure painting class. I've never painted in oil before let alone paint a live figure, so the class is overwhelming but the same time a huge amount of fun. That oil of Snoop was something I did for practice after the first class to mess with the medium. I kid not when I say that I had a cup of water next to my palette before I began the painting. It wasn't till after it did nothing to the paint did I realize my bad...hahaha. The other stuff is from the sketchbook. The fly guy is a study for a large illustration I'm working on that I'm real stoked about. Have a good one!

UK family

Sooo, this is a comissioned portrait of a great family from the UK. They suprisingly asked me to do it in the style of my sketchbook so that's how I handled it. I did it very mixed media: acrylic, ink, spraypaint, and watercolor. It was fun. Thanks to my dad for making the surface...it's actually illustration board on 2 inch deep border all around, about 40in x 14in, cool stuff. The photo is real rough. I would have took it outside to snap a pic but of course this is the day before I leave for school and it is raining here in Detroit....so I pieced the top photo together from multiple pictures. Hope you guys dig it! |

Hands, saxaphones, and pigs!!

So these sketchbook images are for an article in 2dArtist magazine ( http://www.2dartistmagazine.com/ ). I was asked to do a step-by-step of how I handle my sketchbook. The timing worked out fairly well since I just finished the moleskine I was using over the summer so I grabbed a new 'skine and went at it. I really tried to apply what I learned over the last couple months aka going crazy with the mixed media. Each piece was composed as I went along which was a blast compared to doing thumbs and all that jazz. I then scanned them in and did some work in Photoshop. I did substantial work over each one after the traditional phase to try and make it a little more fly. I'll post up the issue number once I find out when they plan to print the article!
*edit* I was just informed that the article will be in the October issue!

....and here are some caricatures from over the weekend. I'm happy with some things, not so much with others. But it was my last day at the zoo, so looking back it was a good run, although I really want to tackle the 3/4 view more, along with going crazier with exaggeration. Hopefully with some time off I can get away from the "retail" style and come back to caricaturing with a new vengeance. -fv

Hip Hop Box

So I'm pretty much done with this series! I did these for a project called Mail Me Art ( http://www.mailmeart.com/ ). You're supposed create art on mail-able packages (boxes, envelopes, tubes, etc) and mail it to an address in the United Kingdom. They post the exceptional ones on the website and in a year or so from now they will have a gallery show where they will put the best submissions up for sale. Dope stuff I say. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to experiment and make some pieces with the knowledge I learned from my summer sketchbook. All the pieces are very mixed media on cardboard...I used acrylic, ink, colored pencil, watercolor, pencil, and anything else that could make a mark. Anyways, it was alot of fun. Some of these have some modifications in Photoshop, others very minor adjustments. I think I have to learn how to stop with the digital stuff though, because sometimes I get too carried away with the shiny effects... o well. I knew I wanted to do pieces that meant something to me so each piece represents a huge hip-hop influence over the years. If you know me, you'll know that if at all possible, when I'm working I'm jamming out to some good hip-hop...so in no particular order the artists represented are: Nas, Black Star, Big Pun, Binary Star, the Roots, and a bunch of squares that were a place holder because this was taking too long...haaha. I put the individual Nas pic by itself just because it looked sort of funky with the other one (even though that's how I did it), and I was happy with how that turned out. And if your feeling exceptionally bored, I included the official F. Vallejo hip-hop box cut out extravanganza...instructions not included..haha. Take care, F.
