Francis, you've got an amazing talent man. Even in high school, i knew you had this gift. It's nice to see that you're making a career out of it. I'm sure you're wondering who this is.......Nick Welsh.

Hi Francis,
It was really great to see a piece done in oil for the LMS, brave dude...I like the strokes and style you went with, although I wasn't sure of what it had to do with "Outbreak." Nevertheless, I'm sure you're moving on past me and Rusty this round. Take it easy.

The face is great, really strong planes, and the hair is really nicely worked - reminds me of Anders Zorn. If I had to reach for a crit, it would be that the hands seem too bright, and the color makes them seem like they belong to someone with a different skin tone. It might just be a photo issue, though. Awesome stuff.

Great piece - Love hte red behind the text at top = something really interesting about it. Only thing that kills me is the bird cage - especially above the bird's head - To my eye, it looks like it starts to get lop-sided and out of whack. The Huneke is freaking spot on.
Much Love!!!

I like the technical aspects of this painting, but to be honest dude, I don't get a reaction out of it other than that. What was your intention?, and you may have worked a bit too much on it. I'm just saying. Much love from one Francis to another.

nice, very nice... i like it all but I think the elipses on the birdcage coulda been a lot tighter...

Wat Sup Francis, this is a awesome piece, very cool brushwork, keep in mind that you are a way better artist than me. But the right eye doesnt seem in proportion with the left eye for some reason, it just looks wierd, other than that, I will not complain. Outbreak, with a sense of the man's suit and animals, is it corporate use of animals without disregard, I dont know, I am just guessing.

Hey dude, Looks nice. As far as crits i have a small issue with the value structure in this painting. I like the top half but the values in the lower half are all over the place. Especially the hands which are too bright and could be tone down to bring focus back to the upper half. THe small monkeys face could pop out a little bit more with saturation and highlights. THe top of the birdcage would go a bit more saturated in colour and bit more lighter. Anyways good job dude. ITs hard to control painting values after working on something for soo long hehe. YOU just need to let it go for a few days and youll be able to see it with a fresh eye. Looking forward to what you post next.

Hey Franicis, thanks for the comments on my film. You're drawings and paintings are really solid, I really like what you're doing in this painting, the mixing of 2D designs with a more realistic oil painting style. It looks like youre headed in a good direction. Cool stuff.

Nice painting man! I like where it is going. The comment I have is that it seems the head and hands are floating in space, like they aren't connected or unified. Looking good, I love the painterliness of it!

The face and animals are beautifully painted, they have that oily feel that I like to see emanating from paintings, and it looks like it was painted rapidly and instinctively, even if it may not have been.

though I must say the birdcage does look a little squashed, that was the first thing I noticed that was wrong with it.

And I don't know if I'm thrilled with the contrast between Typography and illustration, but that might just be personal...

Nice blog by the way :) I noticed it cos you commented on one of my classmates' drawings. Feel free to check mine if ever you have time :)

Peace,

Gauthier

i tried to keep each comment short.
* Text: The bottom right of the O is really close to the hair - probably just overlap the hair a little more
* Red text block: the bottom enters and exits the hair awkwardly, left side looks like it should come out higher, and right should come out lower.
* Bird Cage: perspectives are conflicting
* Hands: pink compared to the yellow in the face, could be knocked back a little
* 5 Cent: something about the flat black area around it, the other blacks have color in them, maybe continuing that approach could help it.
* Sitting Monkey: his head lines up with the suit.

It's looking really good so far, don't burn yourself out on it. Hope you're having a great summer so far :]
