master copies!

Hey folks. One of my goals for this summer is to find time to fill a sketchbook with master copies. I reckon I'll learn a bunch so it should be a good time (yes I said reckon). I also decided that if I ever make a picture with Repin's sheer skill, Rockwell's dedication, and Cornwell's compositions I'll be a happy man. If that's ever going to happen I got a ways to go. But I do think the first thing to do would be to grow a mustache though, since all great artists have mustaches...haha

take care,
-francis

**the top page had copies of Repin, the second has Brulov and Friant, and the last one is Cornwell**

Good post sir. That top spread is killer! A drawing night should be in order soon. I think dustin will be in town this weekend...

On to Repin...
Damn him in all his huge painting glory. The barge haulers piece is definately one of my all time favorite paintings but the medical room with the doctors crowded around the table takes the cake! It is the epitomy of how much actually needs to be shown in an image to get the point across. Just the small glimpse of a leg being held by one of the doctors is enough to say that, that leg is about to be no more...
O Repin... sigh...

sweet! someone else knows who Friant is! love the way he uses those black masses of dresses and silhouettes within the same canvas as beautiful realist ability! and agreed on the mustachio greatness of all artists as well haha

Great studies! I 'discovered' Repin about a year ago through a expo here in the Netherlands (didn't see it, but bought the book. Thanks for the link to the zip file! Loads of paintings I didn't know.

Hi Francis, I followed your link from Rick Morris's blog. Your work is outstanding!
I downloaded the Repin images you so generously provided. Thank you! That's like a whole book! Repin is my new favorite old master.

About the moustache issue... could I get away with a paste on one?

Emile Friant is a third rate realist. Repin like 98% of Russian painters is turgid. Your Cornwell copies show you have no clue to his concept of structure and the technical approach to getting it down on paper.
